Press Releases

The -ber months are almost here, which means many Filipinos are starting to make plans for year-end getaways, family reunions, or that overseas trip they have been saving up for.
But holiday travel can also mean a long list of expenses. There are flights and hotels to book before leaving, meals and activities to pay for while away, and the unexpected expenses along the way.
While setting a budget is a good place to start, it also helps to think about how you pay for your trip. A useful rule to remember is that rewards should follow your spending plan, not determine it. If you already have a credit card with travel benefits, understanding what comes with it could help you get more value from expenses you were planning to make anyway.
Look at how your travel spending is rewarded
Before booking, check how your card rewards the purchases that make up most of your travel budget.
Some cards earn miles on every purchase, while others offer higher rewards for specific categories such as hotels, online bookings, or overseas transactions.
For instance, the Metrobank Travel Signature Visa earns one mile for every PHP30 spent across all categories, while the Metrobank World Mastercard earns one mile for every PHP17 spent on eligible foreign currency transactions, hotel stays, and online purchases.
Beyond rewards and promos, foreign transaction fees can also impact your overall costs. The Metrobank Travel Signature Visa and World Mastercard carry low forex fees for eligible transactions at 1.68% and 1.85% respectively.
If you already have either card, knowing where you earn more can help you be more intentional about which card you use for planned expenses. The goal isn't to spend more to earn points, but to make purchases already within your budget work harder for you.
Check the benefits beyond points and miles
Not every useful travel perk comes in the form of conventional rewards points. Before paying for other trip essentials, it is worth checking whether your card already provides a similar benefit.
If you're flying during the holiday rush, airport lounge access can make long waits a little more comfortable. Both Metrobank cards provide eligible cardholders with unlimited access to select local airport lounges, while World Mastercard cardholders also enjoy two complimentary global lounge visits per year through Mastercard Travel Pass.
Travel insurance is another benefit worth checking.
Travel Signature Visa cardholders who charge their airfare to the card can receive complimentary travel insurance coverage of up to PHP25 million, subject to applicable terms and conditions.
Before your trip, review the benefits your card already provides and, more importantly, the requirements for using them. A lounge benefit you didn't know you had or travel insurance that comes with an eligible airfare purchase could prove useful once you're on the road.
Ultimately, making your holiday budget go further isn't about finding more reasons to spend. Good financial habits apply even when you’re on vacation. It's about planning your expenses, staying within your budget, and making better use of benefits already available to you.
The most rewarding trip isn't the one that earns the most points. It's one you can enjoy without coming home to expenses you didn't plan for.
